Exclusive Programs For Kunto Suaramerdeka.Com
7 January 2004
Kunto Hartono prepared to perform in a new program in ANTV soon after he had managed to break the longest playing drum in the Guiness Book of World Record's version. It was ANTV that showed interest in that Banyuwangi-born man to realize his ideals to become the second Indonesian man that was signed in the prestige book of world record.

The first Indonesian man who was signed in the Guiness Book of World Record was Rudy Hartono who had won All England 7 times in a row. Accidentally the second Indonesian man that was signed in it also named Hartono. "It's just a coincident that my name is same as Rudy's," Kunto said calmly when we met him in Frontrow Cafe, Senayan, yesterday.

ANTV holds expression of gratitude to God yesterday because the LA Light Spectacular Drumming Marathon show had been over. ANTV also was signed up as a tv station broadcasted a longest show ever, that was for 24 hours. The show itself was signed up as the longest art performance in the MURI's version.

Anindya N. Bakrie, managing director of ANTV, said that ANTV still thought the name and form of a special music show for him. In the show he played drum to accompany top bands. That kind of collaboration was a distinctive feature of his performance. The show itself was supposed as same as the show which was held to break a new world record some days before. "I'm happy to get this offering. This is a very significant chance. I will try my best," Kunto said. In that occasion he entertained audiences by playing guitar and even singing a song.

The special music program ANTV will manage was his first program as the longest playing drummer that helds record holder. ANTV signed an exclusive contract with him to show its concern in increasing all Indonesian people's achievement. "We want people recognize him as an Indonesian citizen who has a fantastic achievement. That's why we offer various programs to him," Anindya said. He added that Indonesian people had to know native musicians also, not only foreign musicians. Besides, Indonesian musicians were able to compete with the foreign ones.

Banyuwangi Boy, The Longest Played Drum For 72 Hours
Surya.co.id
The audience cheered and applauded loudly at Gelanggang Olah Raga Remaja Soemantri Brodjonegoro, Kuningan, Jakarta Selatan on Thursday, 1 January 2004. They supported Kunto, a guy originally from Banyuwangi, East Java, to continue playing drum in order to break a record world which is to play drum for 72 hours.

After he had accompanied the performance of Blue Savana, Kunto seemed bewildered. He staggered because he wasn't able to afford drowsiness. Spontaniously his father, mother and relatives stood to join him on stage hugged him and continued to clap their hands in order that he struggled to finish his job.

Even the State Minister of Culture and Tourism, I Gde Ardhika, who had attended since 09.30 got up and approached him while I Gde continued to clap his hands to support him. "My teardrops were falling when I saw him stagger," I Gde Ardhika said.

In the last 10 minutes he continued to play drum and he collaborated with Balinese gamelan played by some crews in front of the stage. Sometimes the rhythm of drum was seemed different from the rhythm of gamelan. But he remained to play drum although he was very tired.

"Five, four, three, two, one ... ," one of the steering committee counted down the last seconds. At 11.15 the audience cheered and applauded loudly at the gym that stood beside a shopping center. Kunto made it. He managed to overcome the drumming world record for 58 hours 17 mintes made by Allister Brown from England on 8 till 10 September 2003.

While he held up his hands and held the stick in his grabs tightly, Kunto got up and walked wobbly to receive a gold medal from I Gde Ardhika. The Universitas Trisakti's rector attended there also gave 5 million rupiahs cash and provided scholarships for him. After he had received the awards, he was laid down by medical team. He even breathed using oxygen tube. While he got back to the stage to give some speech, he had to be supported because he was able to stand.

Not long afterward the Alex Leo and Yuli's son was fled to Emergency Room at Mitra Internasional Hospital in Jatinegara, Jakarta Timur. "Kunto is too tired. His glucose degree was descent, so was his consciousness. But the condition was harmless," Dr. Adolf who cured him said. He took therapy. "One or two days later he will be permitted to go home," Adolf added. "Thank God, I'm happy and touched. I praise the Lord because he manage to complete his job," Mrs. Yuli said when we met her in the backstage. Alex Leo, Kunto's father, also told the same thing.

Kunto started to play drum to accompany top bands such as Sheila On 7, Netral, Jikustik, The Groove, The Fly and Shaggydog since 29 December 2003 at 09.15. He was permitted to take a break for 15 minutes each and every 8 hours. Even if he stopped playing between one song and another, he just was permitted to do that less than 30 seconds. Bens Leo said that the songs composition was very important in order to keep his stamina. "Most of the song he plays are the rock songs, and it was hard for him to keep his stamina healthy. So the songs and the bands have to be arranged. For example, he can perform Top 40 songs and collect his energy at the same time," the man who remained to accompany him said.

Bens added that Kunto's performance would be extraordinary if the Palapa drummer didn't smoke. "He will be more fantastic if he doesn't smoke," Bens said. "Besides, he once involved in drug abuse," her mother said. She was happy that her son was healed. "He once involved in drug abuse, but now he is healed. He just tried out it, so it was not long. He himself struggled to heal. If he didn't tried his best, he wouldn't heal," she added.

Kunto used to jog in the morning and in the evening to prepare his stamina. He also used to consume half-cocked eggs and honey. His determination to break the record world had to be followed. "Please, proceed his spirit. They don't need determination, exercise and preparation only, but the most important thing is determination," I Gde Ardhika said.

Kunto Hartono's World Record Is Treaten not To Be Signed In The Guinness Book Of World Record
It is fitting we should appraise Kunto Hartono's fenomenal success, a Banyuwangi-born drummer, in playing drum for 72 hours. His dream of breaking Alvaro Lopez's world record, which is to play drum for 60 hours, has come true. Will his another dream of signing up as the Guiness Book of World Record's holder come true? That question still remains. That's because the requirements for being signed in the book of world record are very difficult to be fulfilled.

His anxity is reasonable because his effort to become the longest playing drummer ever seems useless if he isn't signed in the Guiness Book of World Record. Based on data Tembang.com collects, he has to fulfill the requirements for being admitted as a world record holder in playing drum nonstop. For example, drummer is only permitted to take a break for 15 minutes after playing drum for 8 hours. He also have to play different songs for 4 hours. It's also required that the gap between one to antother song must be 30 seconds.

Paulus Pangka from the Museum Rekor Indonesia says that he has fulfilled all of the requirements for being signed in the Guiness Book of World Record. But Paulus also says that it's very difficult to be signed in it. "It needs of months, even years to be signed up," he explains.

But there is a misunderstanding between the steering committee (ANTV) and the Guiness Book of World Record's delegation. The steering committee gives a code to Kunto to take a break because they think it's time for him to do so. Unfortunately the Guiness Book's delegation thinks that it isn't time for him to take a break. There is a kind of worry that he won't be signed up as a record holder in the Guiness Book's version.

All of media has reported that he succeeds to break the world record, whereas in fact the Guiness Book hasn't admitted it yet. It means only the steering committee and Indonesian musicians admit it. It says that ANTV will send all of his files to the Guiness Book of World Record. If they think it isn't enough to be signed up as a world record, his record still remains as a MURI's record. Of course it's deeply regretted if it's happened.

Kunto and drum are similar to two unseparated sides of a coin. Since he was in Junior High School, he loved musical instruments very much. The Alex Leo and Yuli's son used every occasion to increase his musical skill. As a man grown up in a country, he thought it was too difficult to increase his musical skill. The village he lived didn't have prosperous facility. That, however, didn't decrease his determination to become a musician.

Even he once was held back a class because of his love with music. He spent more time with his friends playing music. So he didn't think of school. He just thought of how to become a great musician. His carrier wasn't that smooth. He once became a sole maker. He collected his income to buy musical instruments. He once also became a jeans-restyler and collected his income to form a band.

He managed to form a rock band called Palapa because of his determination. In short time his band succeeded to win many festivals. Palapa won West Java Common Band Festival in 1999. He was the guest star in Java-Bali Sampurna Mild bands' parade in Banyuwangi in 2000. Palapa started to be well known, especially by Bogor people. Seemed to be unsatisfied for achievement he gained, he wanted to make a record as the longest playing drummer in the Museum Rekor Indonesia's (MURI) version. MURI welcame his desire. So he was signed up as the longest playing drummer in two MURI's cathegory. He determined to record his achievement in the Guiness Book of World Record. He was supported by ANTV to realize his ideals.
